I am literally loving it, especially participating in the U.S Congress because from what I’ve experienced it involves more casual debates.
What bill are you planning to propose?
The Republican party is planning to pass a bill focused around the mental health of gun owners and prevention so that people who would shoot and hold a gun don’t get access to one

DEMOCRAT BERNIE SANDERS - VALENTINA TRUJILLO
How many times have you participated in MUN?
FIRST TIME PARTICIPATING, I am a rookie. I decided to participate because the president is a friend of mine and as she described it it really called out my name.
So far how could you describe your experience participating?
So far I’ve loved it. To be honest, when I first decided to participate I thought I would have to sacrifice a lot of my school time prior to the debate, nevertheless I figured out that with 4 hours in a day I could finish my research and preparation. It is mostly about organization.
What bill are you planning to propose?
The Democrat Party is proposing the renewal of the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban Law, however with a few changes regarding the language since before its ambiguity created lots of loopholes. For example, a loophole that was found was that semi automatic assault weapons that already existed could still be sold, therefore the Democrat Party wants to implement a system to buy all these weapons so that they are taken away from the hands of civilians. Another significant loophole was that the bill didn’t specify which types of arms they were prohibiting as well as they didn’t specify to ban the accessories that could transform arms into semi automatic. This is why we are planning to propose that all banned arms, rifles and accessories are specified in the law passed. Additionally to what was previously stated, we are also planning to propose the expansion of background checks and a mental health evaluations system.

COMISSIONS REPORT
WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION
Today the world health organization reunited 18 different countries each represented by 1 person to discuss the prevention and management of epidemics and pandemics, and the crisis they are suffering right now from the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion started by discussing some points since yesterday’s discussion ended with a crisis. They then presented draft resolution 1.1 and draft resolution 1.2 to solve the crisis. Both resolutions were put to voting, from which all the delegates voted in favor or against each. Resolution 1.1 was not approved, while resolution 1.2 was. |
US CONGRESS
All the senators of the U.S congress reunited together to continue discussing the renewal of the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban Law and reach a resolution. They met with the purpose of creating a variety of solutions in order to prevent events like massive school shootings. The previously stated law was passed in 1994 with the purpose of preventing the selling, manufacturing, and possession of assault weapons. The law included a set of parameters for the guns that were to be regulated. The law was implemented until 2004 and the congressmen are meeting in order to decide whether it is going to be renewed or reenacted. After the commission was resumed, the delegates were assigned lobby time in which they had 40 minutes to work on a solution that would benefit both parties. There are two main points of discussion, the Democrat Party opened up the presentation of bills stating that they are in favor of the renewal of the law, but including changes regarding the language as it currently contains lots of loopholes. On the other hand, the Republican party proposes including regular background checks, planning to pass a bill focused around the mental health of gun owners and first-time buyers, in order to reduce the amount of mentally unstable owners and buyers so that people who shouldn’t have access to a weapon, don’t get it. The bill also proposes that firearm dealers have access to the NICS database, in order to verify the existence of criminal records or lack thereof, of employees, dealers, and purchasers. Finally, the bill proposes to keep protecting the second amendment rights of all Americans. McConnell Resolution Bill: Bernie Sanders questioned strongly and Mc Connell couldn’t answer. Mc Connell was planning in organizing universal background system checks at the federal level. This was without any sort of funding or coherent reasoning. Sanders constantly argued on where the funds could be found and Mc Connell couldn’t answer. From the congressman the one standing out the most is Bernie Sanders, represented as Valentina Trujillo. In conclusion the Republicans think that the bill was not very effective because of the loopholes but the Democrats want to improve the bill and be more specific and the Republicans want to protect the second amendment so that no gun is Babb, but they still want to do background checks and solve the problem from the bone root not only by removing the weapons (which they will not remove) but also preventing people who are crazy and problematic from having guns. |
HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
The first topic introduced was the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, the delegations were fully aware of the violation of freedom of speech, the violence from rebel groups like the Houthis, the lack of education for children, the amount of rape that has been going on in the country (specifically women) and the scarcity of human resources like water, sanitation food, and the low amount of available medical supplies during the COVID -19 pandemic. The delegation began with a moderated caucus in which the different delegations considered the crisis that was initiated yesterday regarding yemen. Ten delegations provided interventions including the delegates of France, the UK, Yemen, and the US. They each discussed their point of views of this terrible situation regarding Yemen and their conflicts. The Houthis' situation was addressed, the first to intervene were Iran and North Korea. The delegations believe this problem should be resolved in a different way than proposed by the Human rights council. The final consensus sided with the proposal that was put forward by the delegations of the USA and Soudi Arabia . The delegates finished this discussion with 16 votes in favor of the proposal and 1 against. After finishing the voting, our second topic was introduced, debt bondage. Debt bondage is considered to be the modern slavery. Minors fall into little to no paying jobs with no resting hours and no adequate working conditions, people who sadly fall into this category are because they have fallen into debt and wish to repay it. Sadly most of the time they end up working more than they need to, they are not given the opportunity to know when they are paying, how or even if it’s already paid. Debt bondage is a serious problem around the world, that sadly very few people know of. This topic will continue to be discussed in tomorrow’s debates. |
SECURITY COUNCIL
After the huge repercussions of World War II, humanity was left in diplomatic troubles. The United Nations was established as an international organization to maintain worldwide peace and prevent conflicts with severe magnitude. The United Nations Security Council, the main organism in the UN, was designated to maintain international peace and security by addressing issues of great concern around the world, in this case the situation in Afghanistan. After yesterday's controversial press release from Russia, China and India, the commission was left with new concerns to consider. In this press release, the participating countries expressed their concern for Afghanistan and proposed a solution through military intervention (each will provide 50,000 soldiers in Afghan territory). Also, they propose the removal of delegations such as the Taliban for its history of conflict and “the various terrorist acts they have committed. Today’s debating session began with an unmoderated caucus where India, UK, Russia, USA, Pakistan and Afghanistan restated their positions regarding yesterday's session. India remains strong in their position of opposing the Taliban regime as manifested in yesterday’s press release. The UK establishes that they are willing to send troops to Afghanistan to ensure the country’s security, also, emphasizes the importance of Afghanistan’s inclusion in every step and solution, as well as proposing a long term peace treaty. Russia is only considering military intervention and proposes a counter terrorist force to end the conflict once and for all. Doesn't believe that the peace treaty will be effective because the Afghan government cant give the Taliban anything they already don't have. The US proceed to say that retiring troops would be detrimental to Afghanistan and that a peace treaty would be the best solution and something necessary in the long term, and, reinstall more troops in order to ensure civilian protection. The next delegation to intervene was Pakistan, in which the delegation stated that the situation in Afghanistan calls for different measures and agrees with Russia and China but not India because it compromises their country’s integrity. The delegation questions how the US’s solutions claim to be any different from prior ones if they don't even include Afghanistan in their bloc. Last but not least, Afghanistan stated that in 20 years, peace has not been achieved. Peace is being ganied and other countries who try to impose it only want more conflict and emphasize that they only want peace through talking and are willing to work with Iran. As the debate went on, two main blocs formed. The first composed by the delegations of India, Russia and China and the other one composed by the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Mexico, and France. Unfortunately, the commission couldn't reach a solution due to the opposing ideals. There was only one Draft Resolution (1.1) whose sponsors were Mexico, Canada, Kenya, United States, UK and Germany. Press release number 1 was made up of all the Arab delegations. Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and Taliban states wished to keep the peace and ceasefire process between the Arabic territories directly involved in the conflict, as well as maintain foreign nations with secondary interests away from the solution. Press release number 2 was composed of Russia, China, India, Norway and Nigeria, where nations implicated remained with the pounst made in their initial press release made yesterday. After an inconclusive voting session, the delegates entertained a new motion to close the first topic and opened an unmoderated caucus to begin the second topic of open agenda. The presidents gave the delegates an excerpt from the New York Times talking about an armed attack in the Actual Line of Control (Indo-China border) between Indian and chinese soldiers. China claims they do not take responsibility for any actions made in the past days and says they are fake news and argues that the Indian soldiers acted against Chinese military, thus leaving them no more option than to defend themselves and their territory. India is very concerned and condemns the attacks made on the border, they want to invite delegates such as China and to define a border. Russia claims that Indian deception is going on, India wants to steal water located in Chinese territory. They have had interest and intentions of stealing the water and borders in order to aid the preoccupying economic condition of the country. A crisis was presented in the Commission: “Increased attacks on the Line of Control” was the title of the crisis presented by the chair. Due to the crisis being something of such novelty, the delegations have not yet established proper points, only from India, who proposes to sign an agreement with China to end the conflict. More information about the crisis will be available tomorrow. |
DISEC
The day began with the delegates working on the proposals they began working on yesterday. These were presented duly and evaluated as the chair saw fit. Debates followed: two topics were discussed today, the first topic Middle Eastern Nuclear Dilemma, which refers to the conflict revolving around a deal established in Iran in order to regulate its nuclear activity. The second topic was the increasing fire tactics in the hands of belligerent groups, which delved into the rise of terrorist groups in the Middle East such as the Hezbollah, and the interventions from nations in order to end these threats Today, both blocks presented their resolution papers on topic one. The paper established by the United States and its block passed by one vote. This paper established that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries must stop producing nuclear weapons in the Middle East and economic sanctions would be lifted from Iran. Military intervention would also stop. Both papers were voted for on the first topic In the second topic, delegations discussed how to stop the creation of belligerent groups in the Middle East, and how to control already existent ones. This was then preceded by discussions on whether delegates representing Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon were allowed to switch sides, however this did not happen. The delegates reached no definite conclusion for today, and shall continue the discussion tomorrow. |
GLS
This commission is completely different from the others since here the participants of the commission are not delegates from any country but are representatives of leaders around the world. For example, in other commissions it is not spoken in the first person as in this one, also in GLS it is much more dynamic in the way that one speaks of oneself. Today began with 20 mins of debate in which the pros and cons that the leaders were discussing were discussed a little more in depth. After the 20 minutes that the hair was granted, the leaders met again in groups for the lobby time and did their papers. Meanwhile, leaders like Donald Trump or Xi Jin Pin made press releases since they did not have enough people to do a paper. As of the writing of this report, there appear to be a lot of different opinions between the leaders. This can be attributed to a higher number of leaders siding with left wing plans. After the presentation of paper and press releases, there was a call to crisis. The crisis related to the lack of workers rights that were experienced in Stalinist Russia. “The strong opinions of various leaders generated much controversy and movement in the debate and opened the way to the most relevant aspects of the debate. These were the justifications for positions in favor or against ethnic stratification and proposals to eradicate or promote stratification.” - Gabriela De Oliveira (GLS president) The beginning of the new topic as well as the arrival of a couple new leaders such as Che Guzman. The change of topic brought new fervour to the debate keeping all the members on their toes. This topic will continue to be discussed tomorrow, as the different leaders come to some final conclusions. |
